360 degree solar lighting in Wokingham
VolkerHighways has installed Wokingham’s first 360 degree wrap solar street lighting columns at Shinfield Studios – the UK’s largest film and TV studio.
The dynamic columns attract sunlight at all directions and provide 20% brightness 24/7 which increases to 100% power when someone moves within 10 metres of the columns.
The nine new hybrid solar lighting columns, evenly spaced along the footpath, require just daylight to charge, even during the low-sunlight winter months. As hybrid units, they offer flexibility by connecting to the grid if additional power is needed.
When operating solely on solar energy, the columns produce zero carbon emissions and require minimal maintenance beyond occasional cleaning. They eliminate electricity waste, resist wind damage, and remove the need for cabling, trenching, feeder cabinets, or a direct electrical connection to the grid. Solar lighting also offers a significant environmental benefit, saving 11 tonnes of carbon over a 25 year period compared to traditional streetlights.
“From gas lamps that lit cobbled streets to energy efficient LED columns, street lighting continues to evolve. Solar lighting goes that step further, illuminating our cities with the power of the sun. We were pleased to work on this scheme, on behalf of Wokingham Borough Council, and look forward to seeing more local authorities adopt this sustainable innovation.”
