Protect Our People
Our behavioural change programme, Protect Our People, encourages our workforce to promote a positive health and safety culture to create a safe working environment for our people and the communities we work in.
Creating a happy and empowered workforce, that our clients can be proud to work alongside
Protect Our People
Our regular open and transparent engagement sessions encourage our teams to Reflect, Review and Reset on our working environment, attitudes and behaviours.
Topics are steered by the needs of our workforce and business and have previously included:
- Roadworker abuse and incursions
- Conflict management
- Keeping the pieces together (mental health and wellbeing)
- Close call reporting
- Pedestrian and traffic management
We are proud to have 30 Protect Our People champions, with at least one champion on each of our depots/offices. These champions stand with pride to prompt discussion and action to change behaviours on site.
Boots On Before You Log On
In today’s society, we realise too much time is spent on our screens. Our Boots On Before You Log On initiative, launched by our Bath & North East Somerset contract, encourages Supervisors to dedicate more face-to-face time with our operational teams.
This on-site support ensures our teams have the information, equipment and knowledge to complete works safety, before Supervisors begin office-based tasks.
Stamp It Out
We are a proud member of Safer Highways’ Stamp it Out campaign which aims to raise awareness and improve the lives of thousands of frontline workers who suffer physical or psychological abuse while simply carrying out their job.
Mind and body
We have over 20 mental health champions across VolkerHighways, with at least one mental health champion at each of our depots/offices.
Our champions are trained by Mental Health England to be able to signpost their colleagues to the appropriate support. We provide our people, and their families, with access to resources and supporting organisations. A programme of internal campaigns tackles a variety of physical and mental health matters, including talks from guest experts.
Through our wellbeing drop-in clinics, our ‘Know your Numbers’ campaign encourages site and office-based employees to attend our complimentary occupational health wellbeing clinics. Our employees can book to see a health professional to get advice about their diet and receive a medical check on their blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose and BMI.
