The commendation is a positive step for the scheme, which was developed in 2011 with the aim of supporting the recruitment and development of local young people into both the business and the wider Highways term maintenance sector.

The CIHT judges were impressed with the apprentice scheme, especially the opportunity for individually tailored routes for apprentices through the programme. They also liked that in year four
of the scheme, each apprentice became a mentor to a year one apprentice and are given the opportunity to become a ‘Construction Ambassador' by becoming accredited with the CITB.

Commenting on the results of the awards, Bob Pizzey, proposals manager for VolkerHighways said:  "I am delighted that VolkerHighways has been commended for its Apprentice Scheme in the CIHT Awards 2014. The scheme invests in young people, supporting them through basic development and then challenging them to reach their maximum potential through workplace secondments focused on
their pathways of choice."
