A brand-new driveway for CYCD Little Stars Pre-School

VolkerHighways was recently approached by Little Stars Pre-School, part of the Centre for Youth and Community Development in Luton, to resurface the driveway to their nursery, a project that would have been too costly without our assistance.

The driveway had suffered significant wear and tear due to its regular use, and being a charity, the pre-school had no funds to cover general maintenance to property and assets.

Facilitated by Luton Council, VolkerHighways funded the resurfacing and re-lining of the driveway as a gesture of goodwill to enable the charity to continue to support over 5,000 local people each year through their wide range of services for people aged between one and pensioners.

The improvements have enhanced accessibility to the pre-school for the children, parents and staff. It provides a safer environment for their young learners and fosters a more welcoming atmosphere for everyone who visits their facility.

“Your generous contribution of time, resources, and expertise has had an immensely positive impact on our community, and we are truly thankful. We recognise the effort and commitment required to undertake such a project and deeply appreciate the collaboration between VolkerHighways and Luton Council to make this happen. Your willingness to support local institutions like ours exemplifies the strong community spirit that makes Luton a wonderful place to live and work.”

The work involved removing two large metal gates, cutting back overgrown verge, breaking out and removing six tonnes of concrete and two tonnes of bituminous material and laying 12 tonnes of surface course to achieve a level surface. The team also applied a tac coat and laid 19 tonnes of surface course. Thermoplastic markings were also applied to the newly laid surface.

As part of the initiative, the business was eager to involve the pre-school children. The team organised a flag creation workshop, allowing the pre-school children to showcase their creativity and proudly wave their handmade flags to celebrate the new driveway.

“Our communities are at the heart of every project we do, and we are proud to have delivered this scheme completely free to the pre-school. To hear the positive contribution this has made to all those who use CYCD’s services justifies why social value and small acts of community support is essential to create significant, positive change.”
