Working in collaboration with Meon, and our like-minded clients, VolkerHighways has been an early adopter of innovative and sustainable cold-applied methods of practice.

VolkerHighways has worked with Meon on three different schemes, using four of their sustainable materials. The partnership follows early engagement with VolkerHighways’ West Berkshire Highways Maintenance contract and Meon’s On-Tour roadshow in Wokingham.

VolkerHighways adopted a sustainable toolkit of cold-applied MMA (Methyl Methacrylate) solutions, including PermaFyx, UltraCrack and UltraLine.

Arriving ready-to-use and cold-applied, these materials reduce the environmental impact of excessive material usage, while retaining its strength once applied. The materials benefit from quick set, reducing disruption and enabling roads to be opened quicker.

In West Berkshire, PermaFyx was used for ironworks reinstatement. PermaFyx offers a permanent repair and eliminates the need for compaction equipment, reducing the chances of ironwork defects, allowing for versatile application in hard-to-reach areas.

PermaFyx and a thermoplastic road marking paint alternative, UltraLine, was also employed for a speed hump reinstatement in Hampshire.  This hardwearing MMA paint is capable of outperforming the durability of traditional thermoplastic markings.

To repair small crack/joint sealing, UltraCrack – a cold-plastic solution, developed for highly durable crack infill and flexible joint repair, was used on a scheme for sister business unit in Botley.

Further demonstrating VolkerHighways’ commitment to investing in new innovations, employees in West Berkshire have undertaken Meon’s Magma MPAS Approved Installer Programme to deliver PermaFyx solutions in-house.

“Investing in new, sustainable materials, plays an instrumental part in achieving our environmental goals. The solutions have been widely used by our West Berkshire team and we are now working with other contracts and local authorities to adopt other Meon materials.”

“Working with the Volker teams has been rewarding experience through their readiness to adopt a new way of repairing roads. Whilst we’re are early stages of development, the strategic alignment to support Net Zero targets is driving a collaborative partnership that offers benefits to both asset owners and Volker as the contractors.”
