Introducing West Berkshire’s newly named gritting fleet

VolkerHighways recently held a competition with a local school to name our newest members of the team – eight gritting lorries. The gritters are used to keep the highway network moving across West Berkshire during the winter months, tackling snow and ice, to help keep the public safe.

The business partnered up with Castle School, supporting children and young people with a variety of learning difficulties, in Newbury.

The school put forward 30 creative named entries, and after much deliberation, the winning names are:

  • Sir Gritalot
  • Spready Mercury
  • Usain Salt
  • Ice McQueen
  • Big Mean Gritting Machine
  • Melty Micky
  • Plowasaurus Rex
  • Gritney Spears

The winning names have been printed on the front of VolkerHighways’ gritters. Each winner received a goody bag containing a mini gritter toy and book voucher.

During VolkerHighways’ visit to announce the winners, the children got the chance to sit in our gritters and were delighted to meet our mascot, Kerby the Cone.

Jonathan Ullmer, Project Manager for VolkerHighways, said: “We are always pleased to engage with the local community, giving children the chance to learn first-hand about the work we do to keep them safe. Both visits were extremely rewarding and perhaps one day, you may just spot our ‘Big Mean Gritting Machine’ near you.”
