Community funded local football club, Wokingham Town FC, recently reached out to VolkerHighways to help improve the safety and experience of its players and spectators. The club required better lighting around the footway, near the pitch, and required a structural solution to prevent footballs from leaving the grounds.
We identified a cost-effective solution to repurpose street lighting columns that were out of specification for along the highway.
After assessing the grounds and condition of the columns, it was determined that the columns could be safely reused and were strategically placed around the pitch to maximise lighting coverage. The new LED lighting is expected to light up 236m2 of the ground, while reducing energy costs for the club. In addition, the team installed a net to prevent stray footballs from leaving the ground.
Providing a dual purpose, the street lighting columns were adapted to improve lighting and provide structural support for the net.
All works were delivered as part of our ongoing commitment to support our local communities with resources and materials donated to Wokingham Town FC. To build on this success, we are exploring other opportunities to repurpose materials and contribute to similar community projects in the future.
