Over 1,000 EV Chargers rolled out in Richmond and Wandsworth
VolkerSmart Technologies, part of integrated highway services provider, VolkerHighways, has made a significant contribution to the expansion of electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure in central London, enabling access for residents without driveways.
The business recently completed the delivery of 1,050 5Kw in-column EV chargers on behalf of Ubitricity, a major step forward in making EV charging more accessible in urban settings.
The business provided a full turnkey solution, which was delivered in three carefully planned phases including: site surveys to identify suitable lamp posts for installation and civils work including the installation of earth mats. The team also delivered all electrical conversions to retrofit the lamp posts with EV charging capabilities and commissioned the chargers.
Retrofitting street furniture with charging capabilities ensures compliance with safety and regulatory standards, and addresses the logistical challenges of deploying EV infrastructure in densely populated urban areas.
With installations spanning 377 residential roads across Richmond and Wandsworth, minimising disruption was a critical challenge. VolkerSmart Technologies achieved this through effective coordination of permitting processes, issuing clear public and planning notices and proactively engaging with local residents to ensure smooth delivery.
In addition to the installation, VolkerSmart Technologies is committed to the ongoing maintenance of the infrastructure. This includes routine six-monthly testing to ensure equipment is working effectively and reactive and emergency maintenance, with a commitment to responding to emergency callouts within two hours.
This project builds on the long-standing partnership between VolkerSmart Technologies and Ubitricity. To date, the collaboration has seen the installation of over 4,000 chargers across central London, Berkshire, and Oxfordshire.
“We are proud to be supporting the nation’s shift towards sustainable transportation. Making EV charging more accessible overcomes a major part of road user’s hesitance towards making the switch to EV. We look forward to continuing to work with Ubitricity on other projects.”
