Within days the team installed 20 sensors embedded in parking bays along Mosely Street and the connecting Neville Street in Newcastle.

The sensors detect when vehicles occupy or leave a parking space, sending the information to gateways and transmitting it to a database in real time.

The database in turn, connects to a free mobile application, allowing residents and visitors to get real-time availability of the parking spaces on their mobile devices. Some vehicles even allow drivers to check this information, via their dashboard display.

David Easton, business manager for VolkerSmart Technologies, said: “Parking sensors have become increasingly important to our business, as well as the communities in which we work.

“I am delighted that we have been able to work with Connexin, in bringing this smart city solution to the residents of Newcastle.”

Alex Yeung, co founder & COO for Connexin, said: “This has been a challenging project due to its tight turnaround time and the high levels of anticipation around new smart technologies.

“Engaging reputable partners was key to successfully implementing this project, and VolkerSmart Technologies delivered over and above our expectations - both in terms of quality and the timeframe. The whole process has been flawless.”
