An impressive 87% of street lighting columns over 25 years old have been replaced by VolkerHighways and Oxfordshire County Council since the start of their Street Lighting Term Maintenance Contract in 2021.

With the nearing completion of its LED rollout programme across Oxfordshire, this year, attention has turned to testing, reviewing and replacing aged street lighting columns.

Historically, street lighting columns typically last 30 years, before the metal structure begins to corrode and deteriorate, requiring a full replacement. After a review of its assets, some of the columns had found to be in the ground for more 50 years.

The new, modern, columns and LED lighting can last up to 30 years, depending on the ground condition and the local environment. The new LEDs are more energy efficient, last longer with the reduced likelihood of faults and minimise light pollution. LEDs are likely to reduce the Council’s energy consumption by approximately 60%.

David Easton, Operations Director for VolkerHighways, said: “It’s been a busy few years for our Oxfordshire team who have worked tirelessly with our client to rollout the LED and column replacement programme as quickly as possible. This programme will not only reduce the council’s energy costs but will also help to tackle carbon emissions.”
