VolkerHighways and Somerset

Responsible for more than 59,000 street lighting electrical assets, the business will deliver planned, routine and reactive works, as well as capital schemes across the county. Our work will always be delivered to the highest safety and quality standards, which has been verified through our recent award of Gold HERS Status.

As part of the contract, VolkerHighways will be undertaking a series of social value and recruitment initiatives. This includes prioritising the employment of local people and hiring apprentices throughout the duration of the contract who will train to industry standards, working alongside the business’ highly experienced team.

We will be working in partnership with Somerset Council to build meaningful and long-term measurable support in the local community. This includes inspiring the next generation of constructors, supporting local charities and enhancing our biodiversity.

Working collaboratively with Somerset Council and our supply chain partners, we are committed to their journey of a carbon neutral Somerset by 2030. Where possible, we will use locally sourced materials, reduce our carbon emissions and deliver projects sustainably.

The new contract expands our presence in the South West, and neighbours our Bath & North East Somerset Council Highways and Street Lighting Contract.

Peter Walsh, Managing Director for VolkerHighways, said: “We are proud to be the newly appointed contractor for Somerset Council’s Street Lighting Contract. Serving more than 500,000 people across the county, VolkerHighways is committed to delivering the contract to the highest standards of safety, efficiency and innovation, ensuring we leave a lasting legacy in our community.”

“We’re really pleased to announce this new contract, it means Somerset can continue to deliver an excellent service for the Council as well as the residents of Somerset. This was a robust procurement process involving potential suppliers from across the country, taking account of value for money, commitment to environmentally friendly practices and materials, and innovation in practice.”
