The contract began in April, but due to COVID-19, only emergency works were conducted until recently. The full programme of works is now underway, and the contract will continue for five years, with a possible additional four-year extension.

The works will comprise the maintenance of 18,000 lighting assets, including 15,500 street lights and 2,500 illuminated signs and bollards. In addition, VolkerHighways will undertake a capital works programme to replace existing street lighting columns as well as upgrading signage, bollards and approx. 2,000 street lights with new LED technology.

The contract award follows VolkerHighways’ appointment to Bath and North East Somerset Council’s seven year Highways Term Maintenance Contract, which began in April of last year.

Alistair Thompson, managing director of VolkerHighways, said: “I am delighted that Bath and North East Somerset Council have chosen to extend their collaboration with VolkerHighways, to include their street lighting and electrical assets. This will build upon our existing relationship with the council and our growing presence in the South West of the country.”

Councillor Neil Butters, joint cabinet member for Transport Services at Bath & North East Somerset Council, said: “Tackling the climate and nature emergency runs through everything we do, so I’m pleased that our street lighting across the district will become more energy efficient. The new lighting and improved signage will also make our highways safer for drivers and pedestrians.”
