VolkerHighways recently joined parents and pupils of Hoo St Werburgh Primary School for the launch of their new walking bus scheme, along with other green travel supporters - Specsavers Chatham branch and Medway Council.
Walking buses are columns of children walking in crocodile formation to school supervised by authorised volunteer parents. Run by the KM Charity Team, they are a key part of the KM Walk to School campaign.
The school’s walking bus became operational at the beginning of the academic year and has become a regular service for children with parent volunteers on board to assist with the running of the scheme.
VolkerHighways has been a key sponsor of the Walk to School scheme in Medway for the last five years, working together with Medway Council’s Safer Journeys Team. In August, the business extended their support to include the charity’s ‘Super Wow!’ scheme for this academic year.
Sohail Hussain, project manager for VolkerHighways’ Medway contract, said: “We are delighted to be celebrating the launch of Hoo St Werburgh Primary School’s walking bus. This is VolkerHighways’ fifth year supporting the Walk to School campaign and it is great to see more schools taking part.”
Shannon Rivolta, office administrator for VolkerHighways attended Hoo St Werburgh Primary School as a child. Shannon said: “It was a delight to see the great work that the KM Charity Team are doing with the primary school I attended all those years ago. I always walked to school and would have loved to take part in the walking bus.”
More than a quarter of a million school run car journeys were removed from Kent roads last academic year, in favour of more eco-friendly travel.
KM Walk to School is a Medway Council led initiative supported by Eurostar, 3Rs teacher recruitment, VolkerHighways, Countrystyle Recycling, Gallaghers Aggregates, Specsavers, Bel UK, Whitefriars and Orbit.
