VolkerSmart Technologies awarded £2.5 million EV installation works for Trojan Energy

VolkerSmart Technologies has been awarded phase two of the rollout of flat and flush kerbside electric vehicle charge points in Barnet. The approx. £2.5 million contract began this month and is expected to be completed in May 2024. The project is being delivered on behalf of Trojan Energy.

The business is delivering a full turnkey solution from surveys and early contractor involvement through to commissioning and handover of the scheme. The project involves the installation of up to 800 EV charging points across 65 streets in Barnet.

The EV chargers are a new design which sit flat and flush within the footway. This leaves footways entirely clear and fully accessible to other pavement users, when not in use. This is essential for wheelchair users, those pushing buggies or pedestrians with a visual impairment, as it significantly reduces collision hazards.

In addition, VolkerSmart Technologies will provide electrical connections to the DNO through its in-house independent connection team, eliminating the need to wait for third party  power connections.

The team will also be responsible for all permitting, temporary traffic regulation orders and parking bay suspensions during the contract.

The second phase of works have been awarded to the business following its successful delivery of phase one, where VolkerSmart Technologies installed 463 charging points across 33 sites in Barnet.

During phase one, the business provided early contractor engagement with Trojan Energy to design a bespoke ‘jig’ to aid installation, providing a more efficient and safer installation process.

The team also worked with Trojan Energy during the electrical installation phase and suggested modifications to eliminate testing issues.

Alistair Thompson, managing director for VolkerHighways whose VolkerSmart Technologies business unit are delivering the works, said: “We are delighted to be continuing our partnership with Trojan Energy to provide residents in Barnet with the same opportunity to charge their vehicles as those with off-street parking. The EV market continues to soar across the UK, and we are proud to play a vital role in our communities’ transition to electric vehicle connectivity.”

Sean Robertson, Project Delivery Manager at Trojan Energy, said: “We are thrilled to partner with VolkerSmart Technologies once again to deliver the next phase of EV charging infrastructure in Barnet. Together, we have a proven track record of delivering high-quality, reliable charging solutions and are committed to working with Barnet Council to make EV charging accessible and affordable for everyone in the borough.”
