Members of The 5% Club commit to ensuring that a minimum of 5% of their total workforce consists of apprentices, sponsored students or graduates on formal training schemes within five years.

Staff on these programmes currently make up 8.6% of the VolkerWessels UK workforce on projects across the country.

The aim of the campaign is to highlight and address the UK’s skills shortage and high levels of youth unemployment whilst helping the country’s businesses remain at the forefront of innovation. To maintain their membership to the club and be accountable to their pledge, all member companies are asked to publicly report the progress in meeting the 5% commitment in their annual report.

Andrew Edge, VolkerWessels UK HR director said: “VolkerWessels UK places great importance in the recruitment and retention of skilled and motivated people.

“We offer young people a number of different training and development opportunities from site based on the job apprenticeships to university degree programmes with industry experience. These programmes help our young staff develop the skills they need to thrive in the construction industry and help us develop an experienced workforce that understands and adopts the company’s vision.

“We are delighted to become a member of The 5% Club and hope, through our membership that we showcase VolkerWessels UK as an attractive career option as well as driving industrywide recruitment of young people.”

Dr Sam Healy, programme director of The 5% Club said, “We’re delighted to welcome VolkerWessels UK to the initiative. The company’s existing efforts to invest in the next generation are greatly welcomed and together we can strive towards a brighter future for young people in Britain.”
