Highway and street lighting term maintenance

VolkerHighways is working on a highway and street lighting maintenance contract with Wokingham Borough Council which began in 2019 with three possible years of extensions. We work alongside Wokingham Borough Council, WSP for professional services and consultancy, and together, the three organisations form the Wokingham Highways Alliance.

Wokingham

What we do

As part of the contract, we deliver all aspects of highway and street lighting maintenance covering 736km of highway along A roads, B roads and rural and urban roads. We provide planned and reactive maintenance, footway improvements, bridge and street lighting maintenance.

Much of our works are cyclical and include drainage maintenance and repairs, street cleansing, winter maintenance, pothole and patching works and a full emergency response service.

We are responsible for 3,500 road gullies, 243 structures and 16,113 street lighting columns, as well as 764km of roadside footpaths across the county.

We also undertake a range of public realm improvement schemes and bespoke projects to improve and enhance the local infrastructure.

Our community

Placing our community at the heart of our works, we prioritise the employment of local people, work with local supply chain partners and maximise our community contribution through social value activities.

We regularly visit local schools and colleges to educate the next generation of constructors about the rewarding careers available in our industry.

We work with local charities and organisations to support localised community initiatives and events by providing traffic management provision or other resources.

Innovation

We work with our supply chain to source, trial and implement innovative solutions to improve efficiencies and reduce our carbon emissions, while maintaining quality.

These innovations include, but are not limited to:

  • Electric gritter trial - A 19-tonne versatile electric gritter was used on three grit runs on Wokingham's longest grit run of 66 miles. With temperatures between 3 and -1 degrees Celsius, each run lasted around two hours, and achieved 287.90kg CO2e savings.
  • RoadAI - a road asset management system that combines geospatial videos, driver made annotations and computer vision analysis to support road maintenance and management. This has been integrated into the project since 2022.
  • Asphalt preservation scheme
  • Eco friendly plastic kerbs
