Medway Council
Highway and street lighting term maintenance
VolkerHighways is working with Medway Council on a highways and street lighting term maintenance contract, which started in 2017. Our long-standing relationship began in 2007, providing a continuity of highway services for Medway residents and road users alike.
What we do
As part of the contract, we deliver all aspects of highway and street lighting maintenance covering 827km of highway along A roads, B roads and rural and urban roads. We provide planned and reactive maintenance, footway improvements, bridge and street lighting maintenance.
Our works are varied and include drainage maintenance and repairs, winter maintenance, pothole and patching works and a full emergency response service.
We are also responsible for the regular maintenance and inspection of the 725m long Medway Tunnel, which accommodates approximately 40,000 vehicle journeys each day.
We also undertake a range of public realm improvement schemes and bespoke projects to improve and enhance the local infrastructure.
We regularly work with our supply chain to source, trial and implement innovative solutions to improve efficiencies and reduce our carbon emissions, while maintaining quality.
In the community
Placing our community at the heart of our works, we prioritise the employment of local people, work with local supply chain partners and maximise our community contribution through social value activities.
As a member of Greener Highways, we are committed to helping to preserve and improve the natural environment.
Industry recognition
Our collaborative partnership with Medway Council has been verified through BSI ISO 44001 Collaborative Business Relationship standard, which was achieved in 2021.
We take pride in being recognised for our success through industry awards. In Medway, we have celebrated our commitment to the local community through two International CSR Excellence Awards by the Green Organisation in recent years.
"VolkerHighways has provided us with a first class highways maintenance service in the past and we were pleased to award this current contract to them. It’s important that we look after roads in Medway to ensure the safe travel of residents and visitors."
