Strood town centre regeneration

As part of VolkerHighways’ ongoing highways maintenance and infrastructure contract with Medway Council, public realm improvement works were completed in and around Strood town centre.

Strood town centre is a busy area with a range of well-known high street shops and family businesses, so maintaining pedestrian and delivery access was crucial throughout the works.

The works demonstrated VolkerHighways’ project management and operational expertise in undertaking large-scale improvement works, and bespoke solutions to meet the specific needs of the council.

  • Resurfaced and remodelled roads junctions and car parks
  • Installation of high-friction surfacing and raised speed restriction tables
  • Road markings, pedestrian crossings and traffic signals
  • Portuguese granite paving
  • Attractive specialised granite spheres to improve public safety
  • Installation of three automated bus stops, benches, cycle stands and litter bins
  • Planted 39 trees
  • Replaced streetlights with energy efficient LED lanterns
  • Installed bespoke lighting in Friary Precinct
  • The works enhanced the local area, while reducing congestion
  • Traffic and pedestrian access was maintained throughout works
  • Resurfacing works completed over three weekends of 24/7 rotating shifts
